٠٠:٠٢:٤١European Council President Charles Michel said that a "national inclusive dialogue with the support of the OSCE is the only realistic path" forward for Belarus, which has been gripped by protests in recent weeks, during his pre-recorded speech at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
Michel also said that the latest presidential elections in Belarus were "rigged" and that the outcome was not acknowledged by the EU, saying: "We stand alongside the Belarusian people who have to be free, without any outside influence, to decide for themselves their own future."
He added that the EU is concerned with the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, where there are heightened tensions between Greece, Cyprus and Turkey due to disputes over exclusive economic zones.
"The European Union is concerned by the tensions in Eastern Mediterranean. Unilateral actions, breaches of international law must absolutely be stopped," he said.
The EU Council president further explained that a multilateral conference to discuss the matter is being prepared. "Numerous partners confirmed their participation and are ready to discuss the various plans put forward," he confirmed.
Michel also took the opportunity to pay tribute to victims of COVID-19 and the healthcare professionals on the medical battlefield, confirming that in Europe "more than 142,000 people have lost their lives."
