Thousands of people protested outside the Moldovan parliament in central Chisinau on Sunday, demanding the resignation of President Maia Sandu and the government, as well as the dissolution of parliament.

Footage shows demonstrators chanting, waving Moldovan flags, holding placards and banging tin cans, as they called for action on rising prices and help with energy costs ahead of the winter months.

The rally’s organisers, supporters of the opposition Shor Party, erected more than a dozen tents in front of parliament, dubbing them a 'City of Change'. The protesters said they wouldn’t be moving until their conditions were met.

"Starting today, we will protest en masse every Sunday until we get the government out of power… We start setting up tents, which will operate non-stop until the current regime is dismantled and early parliamentary and presidential elections are called," said Ilan Shor, party chairman, in a video message.

The Moldovan police claimed 6.500 people took part in the rally, but organisers suggested there were 45,000 on the streets of Chisinau. There was no official information about any arrests.

In May mass anti-government rallies began in the country over soaring energy and food prices, as wel as falling living standards and record inflation.
