Police deployed tear gas as thousands of people gathered to call for electoral reforms and a boycott of the Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong on Sunday.

Footage shows thousands of people gathering in Hong Kong's Chater Garden, waving US, Taiwanese and South Korean flags.

Organisers had initially applied for a permit for a march, but police only allowed a rally in the park.

Clashes reportedly broke out between protesters and plainclothes officers as the rally spilled into nearby streets, prompting riot police to deploy tear gas in an attempt to disperse the rally.

Hong Kong has been rocked by more than six months of anti-government protests triggered by the now-withdrawn extradition bill. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and police.
