The General Secretary of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) Volker Wissing re-affirmed a preference for a potential 'Jamaica' government coalition during a press conference held in Berlin on Wednesday.
A 'Jamaica' arrangement would encompass a potential governing coalition between the FDP, the Green party and the Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU).
In response to a question on the FDP's coalition preference, Volker Wissing replied: 'Yes, we have explained this through substantial points. And since the substance of the parties have not changed, we continue to have this preference.''
The FDP held a positive first-round of exploratory talks with the Green Party on Tuesday evening, with the Greens announcing a follow-up meeting on Wednesday.
Speaking at the conference, Wissing also confirmed that the FDP will be holding talks with the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
"Coming from the SPD (Social Democratic Party), the offer to talk has been signalled quite early on and we have said from the beginning that we will firstly talk with the Green [party] before making any further decisions,” explained Wissing.
“Now that the talk with the Green [party] took place yesterday, we had to decide today about the offer to talk with the SPD. We have agreed respectively and decided to talk on Sunday,'' added Wissing.
Wissing also emphasized that the FDP's goal was ''to achieve a formation of government and not to block each other and making the formation of a government difficult.''
The SPD's Olaf Scholz has expressed a desire to form a coalition government with the FDP and the Greens on Monday as parties begin to compete for a governing majority.
