Formal government coalition talks in Germany began on Sunday, with a meeting between the leaders of the CDU-CSU and the FDP in Berlin.

A week after the German parliamentary elections, party leaders could be seen arriving at a venue for talks on possible coalitions, with CDU leader Armin Laschet, FDP chairman Christian Lindner and CSU leader Markus Soder, among others.

The conservative CDU and centre-left Social Democratic parties both aim to lead the new government.

While the SPD was the party with the most seats in September 26 elections, it was only slightly ahead of the centre-right Union; Both parties still need to form a coalition with two others, namely The Greens and the FDP, to secure the chancellorship.
