Anti-racism activists and family members of the deceased unveiled on Friday a mural commemorating the nine victims of a racially-motivated shooting in Hanau this last February, holding a ceremony underneath the Friedensbrucke in Frankfurt where the artwork resides.

"The biggest problem in Germany is still the trivialisation of the problem of racism that has been spread by rightwing terrorism. These are no longer somewhat small racists attacks, but rather real murders with racist motives. And as long as the government doesn't recognise that, it will remain our biggest problem," said activist and organiser of the event Haida Adal.

The mural shows the faces of all nine victims, all of foreign origin, including their names and the words "Racism is Dead" and "Never Forget."

At the unveiling of the memorial Cetin Gultekin, brother of Gokhan Gultekin who was killed in the attacks, called for an end to racism in Germany and said that such incidents should never be repeated in the country.

The victims were killed when a 43-year-old German citizen from Hanau opened fire outside a shisha bar in the city's Heumarkt district, driving off to a second location in the Kesselstadt district, where he opened fire again before taking his own life and that of his mother.
