Residents of Porto Velho, situated in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, responded to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's decision to reject a G7 offer of aid to fight fires in the tropical region this Tuesday.

"We really need this money because we are in a disastrous and urgent situation," argued Maria.

"The situation is serious here in Porto Velho," added Luciano. "He cut some IBAMA [Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources] funds, cut spending, this is hindering the inspections."

The same G7 package which Itamar thought was a "great idea", was rejected as "lacking respect" by fellow Porto Velho resident Wellington.

He said that the fires were typical in the Amazon at this time of year: "I believe that if they wanted to help, it would be otherwise, not wanting to impose on them external ideas, internally."

Bolsonaro has ruled out accepting the $22m (€19.8m) package unless he gets an apology from his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. He accused the French leader of insulting him personally by calling him a liar. Macron had said the Brazilian president was 'lying' about fighting climate change.
