NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg condemned any potential use of nuclear weapons by Russia against Ukraine, while addressing a meeting of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament, in Brussels on Tuesday.

"Our message is that any use of nuclear weapons is absolutely unacceptable, it will totally change the nature of the conflict and Russia must know that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought," said Stoltenberg.

The Secretary General also claimed that support for Ukraine must be continued during what he called a 'hot winter'.

"We need to be prepared for a hot winter, be prepared to continue to provide support because the alternative to not provide support to Ukraine, then we risk to pay a much higher price, then we really risk a dangerous situation in Europe that it will also makes us even more vulnerable," he said.

Stoltenberg also said that that European states must increase defence production, to ensure their own protection as well.

"We need also to ramp up production, I met with NATO arms directors this morning and we are now discussing how we also in co-operation with the European Union can ensure that we produce more so we can deliver more, both ensure our own deterrence on defence but also to provide support to Ukraine," he stated.
