French police fired tear gas and blasts of water at G7 protesters as they rallied in the city of Bayonne, roughly eight kilometres (five miles) away from the host city of Biarritz on Saturday.

Footage shows demonstrators marching through the streets and chanting despite the ban on protesting in Biarritz and surrounding towns, as they take shelter from the water blasts and tear gas fired at them.

Demonstrators can also be seen angrily ramming against a fence and trying to tear it down as they charge against it.

The G7 summit, which runs from August 24 to August 26, and will see the participation of the leaders of the Group of Seven (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and United States) as well as representatives from the European Union.

Australia, India and Spain have also all been invited to attend some parts of the summit as guests.
