The UK parliament voted down the government's programme motion on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out his plan to call a general election in December. By 312 votes for with 295 against, MPs voted to open the door to amending Johnson's bill, which the government had aimed to prevent.

Amendments that were then put forward included allowing 16 and 17 year-olds to vote, as well as other amendments aimed at moving the date of an election forward from the government's choice of December 12.

"Not only has this house been considering this issue for three-and-a-half years, but last week when this bill was being debated there was not a single new idea, there was not a single new suggestion, and all they wanted was more time, more weeks, more months, when they couldn't even provide the speakers to fill the time allotted," said Johnson.
