Top officials of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens gave statements following talks on a possible coalition between the parties, in Berlin on Sunday.

Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock highlighted the objective of forming a new government, “At this moment, we will not only create a new beginning in Germany but also speak to each other in a new constellation, in a three-way constellation for the first time. It is crucial that these conversations are trusting so that we can reliably obtain what is needed for renewal in this country, so it can be set on track.”

The Greens co-leader Robert Habeck pointed out differences with the FDP, with whom they held talks in the past few days.

“The difference is above all that the SPD has been in government for many years, while the FDP and the Greens worked out their programs in the opposition. But we also found a willingness in the SPD and determined to do it again start to ignite a dynamic that can then perhaps solve the remaining problems.”

Potential coalitions include the 'Jamaica' and the 'traffic light' coalitions. A 'Jamaica' coalition would comprise of the Greens, CDU/CSU and FDP governing majority, whereas the 'traffic light' coalition would be formed between the Greens, SPD and FDP.
