The leaders of Germany's opposition SPD party held a news conference in Berlin on Sunday following the EU parliament election. Exit polls suggest, the SPD is third behind the ruling CDU party and the Greens with just over 15 percent of votes.

"The results, we know so far, are very disappointing for the SPD. Everyone knows that the polls for the SPD in the past week were not good. The task was to try and work our way out of low numbers. However, despite all the effort, we couldn't change that", said SPD party leader Andrea Nahles at the news conference.

Another key SPD party member Katarina Barley said: "Of course, I am very disappointed with the results of this election, any other reaction would be just whitewashing." Both leaders said they will analyse the party's low numbers in the EU parliament vote.
