After reports of long queues and missing ballot papers during Berlin's so-called 'super election day' in Berlin on Sunday, the city's top election official said mistakes would be 'seriously investigated.'

Speaking at a press conference in the German capital in Berlin on Monday, State Election Officer Petra Michaelis said that "an inventory of the relevant election mistakes" would be carried out.

"We will have to seriously investigate if voters were not able to cast their vote. This allegedly happened because they were not provided with a sufficient amount of ballot papers or the correct ballot papers," Michaelis added.

On Sunday Berliners went to the polls to vote for the new Bundestag, as well as for state elections, and a referendum on expropriating properties from housing giants in the city.

Michaelis said that one reason for the election issues could be COVID-19 hygiene restrictions and the increase in the amount of polling stations.

The election official also didn't rule out whether the election would have to be repeated due to the issues, ahead of the offical release of the results on October 14.

“The election is democratic when all voters were able to use their right to cast their vote. And if it is the case that some voters were hindered then - as I already said - this is a relevant election mistake, and then it is a violation against the regulation of voting rights," she stressed.
