According to official figures, 7,000 people attended a rally for right-wing presidential candidate Eric Zemmour in Lille on Saturday.

During the rally, he blamed immigration for economic and social problems and said he feared the Islamisation of the country. Zemmour told his supporters: "I see the sadness, the misery, the indignation, and the anger. They tell me, I listen to them."

France will be holding presidential elections on April 24. Outgoing president Emmanuel Macron is running for reelection and is currently leading the polls. Eric Zemmour is competing with the president of his party, Marine Le Pen, for the candidacy of the far-right party.

Zemmour was fined in January by the Paris Criminal Court on charges of provoking racial hatred.
