The UK's House of Commons voted 438 to 20 to approve Prime Minister Boris Johnson's bill calling for an early general election on December 12.

The bill goes next to the House of Lords. If passed unchanged, the Parliament will be dissolved on November 6.

Johnson's Conservative party is currently leading in opinion polls with around 37 percent of the vote, while the Labour party sits around 24 percent, with the Liberal Democrats near 17 percent.
