US Secretary Mike Pompeo commented on the situation in Latin America during a press conference at the University of Louisville in Kentucky on Monday.

"We, in the Trump administration, will continue to support countries trying to prevent Cuba and Venezuela from hijacking those protests and will work with legitimate governments to protest, to prevent protests from morphing into riots and violence that don’t reflect the democratic will of the people. And we will be vigilant too," stressed Pompeo.

Pompeo expressed satisfaction with changes happening in the region. "Many nations have made a sharp turn towards democracy and capitalism, good government, away from dictatorship and socialism, and the corruption that has been endemic in some of those countries," he added.

Regarding Bolivia, he said that "Bolivians are rebuilding their democracy," referring to the recent departure of the country’s former president Evo Morales and the new government of interim president Jeanine Anez, who on November 24 signed a piece of legislation allowing for new general elections to be held.
