Ukraine's Environment minister Ruslan Strilets announced that the ecological impact of the conflict in his country has amounted to 37 billion euros, speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP 27) on Monday.

"Today, the amount of damage is at least 37 billion euros, in particular, the damage of fertile Ukraine soils amounts to more than 11 billion euros," said Strilets.

Strilets added that greenhouse gas emissions have multiplied due to the ongoing military action, even though industrial production has been significantly reduced.

"Emissions on the territory of Ukraine in 2022 exceed the amount of emissions in 2021 by 23 times. At the same time, our industry can only work at 25-30% of its potential," he added.

According to the minister, at least 33 million tonnes of CO2 have been emitted in the country since February, adding that infrastructure restoration might raise that number to 49 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, Strilets stated that the coming winter could be the hardest in history and that Kiev was trying to secure firewood for the citizens amid the escalating energy crisis.

During the presser, the minister also claimed that almost a third of the territory of Ukraine was mined, turning the it into "the most mined country in the world".

COP27 has gathered representatives from around 200 countries, including US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz amongst others, to discuss the fight against climate change. The conference runs until November 18.
