A group of demonstrators rallied around an inflatable balloon depicting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe emerging from a bucket of coal, outside a coal-fired power station in Kobe on Thursday, to protest the PM's efforts in promoting and funding coal power plants.
Footage shows protesters standing around the inflated Abe balloon and holding a large banner that reads "No coal Japan."
One of the demonstrators shared her wish for Japanese leaders to "discuss a lot more about reducing greenhouse gas domestically" during the G20 summit.
The protest was held as part of the No Coal Japan campaign, backed by a coalition of civil society organisations.
Environment and energy will be one of the main themes of discussion of the 14th G20 summit which kicks off in Osaka on Friday.
