Winemakers in Ahlweiler who were hit heavily by flooding last month are taking catastrophe and turning it into opportunity through a donation programme.

Wines that survived the flood will be collected and sold as 'flood wine' with the proceeds going to help the wineries affected by the natural disaster.

Through the group called 'Ahr- A wine region needs Help for Rebuilding e.V.', money will be collected and put into a pot for those in need.

"We are trying our best to help out and support them and one of the special activities we have done has been 'flood wine' and we are pleased with how well it has been going. We think we are on the right track," one of the winemakers behind the group, Peter Kriechel, noted.

"What's amazing about the flood wine initiative we started is the nearly €4 million ($4.68 million) we have already collected from 43,000 donors. We have some wines that brought €500 ($585) that's great," another winemaker shared.

The flooding in mid-July was the deadliest natural disaster experienced by Germany in almost 60 years, with at least 177 deaths, while the bill for to repair the damage is estimated to run into the hundreds of billions.
