Temporary flood barriers went up in the the western Germany city of Koblenz, where the Rhine and Mosel rivers meet, on Friday, as heavy rains caused the water levels to rise.

Shipping was also halted on the key economic waterway, with both rivers overflowing their banks in the city and flooding nearby green areas.

Over 100 people have died and over 165,000 people are without power in Rhineland-Palatinate and the neighbouring state of North Rhine-Westphalia, after torrential rain lead to flash flooding and landslides.

The German Defence Ministry confirmed that soldiers have been sent to assist in the search and rescue effort.
