Athletes from the German Olympics squad received a warm welcome at Frankfurt Airport on Sunday, as they returned from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
64 athletes including Olympic champion Denise Herrmann, Claudia Pechstein and German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) president Thomas Weikert were greeted by their friends and families alongside German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Beuth, after winning 27 Olympic medals in Beijing.
"You come back with mixed feelings. On one hand the organisation has been exceptional, friendly volunteers, the competition sites were exceptionally beautiful,” commented DOSB president Weikert.
“On the other hand, there is the problem of sustainability - when you look at what has been constructed into the mountain; when you see the snow bands while there was not much [natural] snow around them. The human rights situation has not changed and remains problematic,” added Weikert.
The Winter Games ended on Sunday with a closing ceremony, having been ongoing since February 4. Germany concluded the event ranking second, with Norway ranking first and China third.
