At least 17 people were reportedly arrested with extensive ID checks and belonging searches in Hong Kong on Sunday, as people gathered to hold a vigil for protesters who were allegedly killed in demonstrations last year.

One of the protesters could be seen being arrested with police searching his bag as well as IDs of press and demonstrators. Police threatened protesters with being arrested for "illegal gathering" if they refused to leave.

Protesters blame police for several deaths, such as the death of 15-year-old Chan Yin-lam and 22-year-old Alex Chow Tsz-lok.

Chan Yin-lam was found dead in the sea after several accused the police of murdering her for participating in the 2019 Hong Kong protests, which the police deny.

Alex Chow Tsz-lok, a student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, died in November after suffering a fall from a multi-storey parking lot as he was allegedly fleeing tear gas dispersed by the police during a weekend protest.

Hong Kong was rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill. The rallies evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by months of clashes between protesters and the authorities.
