Detentions took place at rallies across Russia on Wednesday, after President Vladimir Putin announced partial mobilisation during an address to the nation.

Footage, shot in Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, St Petersburg, Perm, and Voronezh, shows police officers detaining protesters and taking them to a police van. 

There was no official information about detentions on the day of the action. 

Russian Interior Ministry spokesperson Irina Volk said that the unsanctioned rallies, held in the evening of September 21 in a number of regions, 'brought together an extremely small number of participants'.  

"All of them have been suppressed, and the people who committed offences have been detained and brought to the territorial police departments for investigation and prosecution," she added.

The Moscow prosecutor's office reminded citizens that participating in such rallies and calling for others to take par are punishable 'under current administrative and criminal law'.
