German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande held a joint press conference in Paris, Friday, after the Normandy Quartet agreed on the withdrawal of light weaponry from Ukraine’s frontlines.

Merkel told press that there is hope for easing the conflict. "I can say that both parties are moving together regarding the upcoming process," she said. "I believe that we have achieved today all that we could achieve," Merkel said, adding that "we can speak in a positive tone."

Meanwhile Hollande stated that the Donbass local elections, planned for October 18, “can’t take place if they do not meet the requirements we’ve asked for”, and added that to ensure the success of the elections is necessary “to vote the electoral law, that will be discussed in the working group.”

The Normandy Quartet is a diplomatic group of representatives of Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France, set up to try to resolve the conflict in the East of Ukraine. The name came after meeting of the heads of the four states, which for the first time was held on June 6, 2014, in Château de Bénouville, Normandy (France).
