05:05Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated Russia favours 'preserving space as an exclusively peaceful environment', while speaking at the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies meeting in Moscow on Thursday.
"Russia, as a party to the Outer Space Treaty, has always been in favour of preserving space as an exclusively peaceful environment. We support the progressive development of space science and technology, as well as equal and mutually beneficial co-operation in the exploration and use of near-Earth space for peaceful purposes," the minister said.
For his part, the head of Roscosmos Yuri Borisov emphasised the importance of joint work of the BRICS countries on space exploration.
"We highly appreciate the work of the BRICS countries on the joint acquisition and use of remotely sensed data. Through the joint use of information obtained from spacecraft and ground infrastructure facilities of the BRICS countries, opportunities have been expanded to address global climate change, <...> [and to] protect the environment and ensure sustainable socio-economic development," Borisov noted.
"The aspirations of a number of Western countries to turn outer space into an arena for possible hostilities are of particular concern," he added.
The BRICS Heads of Space Agencies meeting chaired by Russia takes place from May 23-24, 2024, in Moscow. The two-day programme of the meeting includes an exchange of views on international co-operation in the field of space activities.
BRICS has undergone two expansions since its foundation in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the group, which included Brazil, Russia, India and China. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia were invited.
