Head Russia's Dagestan region Sergei Melikov visited the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Derbent on Monday, following an armed attack the previous day.

The footage shows him entering the room of Archpriest Nikolai Kotelnikov, who was killed in the shooting. Also in the video, employees of the Russian Investigative Committee are seen working at the scene of the shooting in Makhachkala.

The government's press service added that Melikov would also inspect the Derbent Kele-Numaz synagogue, which militants set on fire. Afterwards, he is scheduled to hold a meeting with the city administration.

Sunday saw a series of deadly attacks by unknown gunmen on churches, synagogues and police posts in Russia's predominantly Muslim Dagestan, in both Makhachkala and Derbent. At time of publication, around 20 people were confirmed dead, many of them police officers, and dozens taken to hospital.

The National Anti-Terrorist Committee (NAC) announced on Monday that five militants had been killed following a counter-terror operation.

Chair of the Public Supervisory Commission for Dagestan Shamil Khadulaev stated that a clergyman was killed in the attack in a church in Derbent, while a security guard was shot in a cathedral in Makhachkala.

The Russian Investigative Committee for the Republic of Dagestan has opened criminal cases into the attacks as possible 'terrorist acts'.

Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov described the incident in his Telegram channel as 'a despicable provocation and an attempt to bring discord between religions'.
