Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov speaking with journalists in Moscow on Monday said the Kremlin doesn’t know yet what charges Paris pressed against Telegram CEO and founder Pavel Durov.

"We don’t know yet what exactly Durov is accused of. We have not yet heard any official statements on this matter. And before we say anything, we should wait for the situation to become clearer as to what exactly they are trying to incriminate Durov. Without that, it would probably be wrong to make any statements," Peskov stated.

Media outlets claimed Durov, a Russian national with French and UAE citizenship, was arrested shortly after his private jet landed in the Paris-Le Bourget airport on Saturday evening.

French officials have not commented, but according to local media, the investigation is reportedly related to allegations of a lack of moderation that allowed 'criminal activity'.

Telegram claimed that its 39-year-old CEO had 'nothing to hide' and that its 'moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving'.

"It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform," the statement continued.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova reported that the embassy in Paris 'immediately swung into action' following the detention.

Pavel Durov launched the Russian social network VK in 2006, holding the post of company's CEO for eight years. In 2013, the entrepreneur founded the Telegram messaging app, headquartered in Dubai since 2017.
