٠٠:٠٥:٤٣Russian cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov showed off his 'cooking' skills in zero gravity, aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Exclusive footage taken on Saturday, October 28, shows Borisov cutting open sealed bags of dehydrated food and drinks and filling them with water.
"This is what I'm having for dinner," he explained. "It's asparagus, mashed potatoes with mushrooms, black bread, chicken salad with pineapple, and vegetable cream soup. It's such a symbiosis of Russian and American products and in order to cook them, I need to add hot water. It takes the longest to recover - that is to brew, but the proper word is 'recover' - mashed potatoes with mushrooms. It says here to add 200 millilitres of hot water and wait 10-15 minutes."
According to Borisov, there is also no cold water on the ISS, so the cosmonauts use warm water to rehydrate their drinks.
The cosmonaut added that despite zero gravity he can use cutlery, but some dishes are best served when squeezed out of the bag into the mouth.
"I have a spoon, a long spoon is handy, and with the help of the spoon I get into the bag. It seems that in zero gravity the food would fly off, but no, it actually sticks to the spoon. This salad is delicious, and it’s more convenient to eat the mashed potatoes by squeezing it out of the hole," he said.
Video taken on Monday also has him demonstrating the food storage container and opening packet of borscht.
Borisov arrived at the ISS aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft with the Crew-7 expedition on August 27.
The crew also included NASA astronaut and Crew-7 commander Jasmin Moghbeli, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa.
He is the third Russian cosmonaut to travel to the ISS aboard a SpaceX rocket, after Anna Kikina and Andrey Fedyaev, who arrived at the station in October 2022 and March 2023 respectively.
