Bolivian President Luis Arce claimed that BRICS economies managed to 'break the hegemony of the United States', speaking at a plenary session of the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday.

"The economies of the BRICS bloc have been able to break the hegemony of the United States. They are the hope for promoting co-operation and complementarity among countries," Arce said.

He added that in order to build a multipolar world, the countries 'need to work on eliminating inequality' and create 'new blocs such as the BRICS group'.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa called for the 'removal of illegal sanctions' that were holding back Africa’s economic development.

"The collective West continues to pursue hegemonic tendencies that blatantly violate sovereign equality of nations, justice, and fairness, as embodied in the United Nations Charter," he claimed.

SPIEF 2024, taking place from June 5-8, includes participants from over 136 countries. Since its inception in 1997, the forum has served as a platform for international dialogue on economic matters, with the patronage and participation of the Russian Federation's president since 2005.
