Chisinau residents on Monday protested against the Constitutional Court of Moldova decision proclaiming the opposition Shor party unconstitutional.

Footage shows the chairman of the Constitutional Court of Moldova, Nicolai Rosca, reading out a ruling banning the activity of the party. Shor supporters were seen outside the court protesting against decision and chanting: 'We demand justice', 'Down with Maia Sandu', 'We will not back down'.

"We feel infringed, we feel that our rights have been infringed. We are told what language we should speak. Moldova is a multinational state. Moldova is a neutral state. We stand for peace, for friendship between the peoples," noted protester Mila Kostenko.

Another rally participant said he will always support the Shor party because it 'defends the interests of the people'.

No official information from the Moldovan Interior Ministry about the arrests during rally was released at the time of publication.

Upon the court's decision, the activities of the Shor party are proclaimed to be illegal and the Moldovan Ministry of Justice has been instructed to establish a commission to liquidate the party and remove it from the state register of legal entities.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that "a political party created out of corruption and for corruption is a danger to the constitutional order and security of the state".

According to Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean, Shor 'often violated the law' and also received financial support 'from a third state secret service with the aim of destabilising Moldova' and deviating from its course towards European integration.

For his turn, party chairman Ilan Shor stressed that he and his team would find legal forms to continue projects and would participate in all elections despite the ban on activities.

The party's deputy chairwoman, Marina Tauber, said that the legal team intends to challenge the decision in the European Court of Human Rights.

The Moldovan Constitutional Court launched an enquiry into the activities of Shor on 10 May at the request of the government, which accused the party of acting 'contrary to the principles of the rule of law and endangering the sovereignty and independence of the republic'.

The defence claimed the accusation to be unfounded since the party did not violate the Constitution and 'acts in accordance with the Moldovan legislation'.

In November 2022, the Moldovan government also argued for the liquidation of the opposition party in connection with the rallies, but the Moldovan Constitutional Court did not accept the request to liquidate the political organisation.
