Police detained a suspect after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the Russian Embassy in Chisinau, as citizens came to vote on the final day of the presidential election.

Footage taken on Sunday shows locals attempting to apprehend the man before law enforcement officials intervened and took him to the police station. The video also revealed scorch marks on the building's roof and tiles. Some residents can be heard shouting that 'people need to see who he is' and accusing him of putting children at risk.

"A man threw two containers with flammable substances over the fence of the Russian embassy in Chisinau," stated the Moldovan Interior Ministry's press service. "He was immediately detained and identified and is currently at the police inspectorate for questioning and paperwork. The 54-year-old man is a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, but claims that he is also a citizen of the Russian Federation, a fact that has yet to be established by law enforcement officials."

As of the time of publication, the voter turnout in the presidential election, including remote electronic voting, was reported to be 70.57 percent, according to the Russian Central Election Commission.

Russia's presidential election takes place over three days on March 15-17, with early voting between February 25 and March 14.

The four candidates are Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), the Communist Party's Nikolai Kharitonov, Vladislav Davankov of the New People Party and incumbent President Vladimir Putin, running as an independent candidate.
