Supporters of the opposition Chance party and Shor party, recognised as unconstitutional in Moldova, marched in a protest in Chisinau calling for 'fair' local elections.

Footage recorded on Friday shows hundreds of protesters marching through the city streets, while carrying posters and chanting slogans such as "Chance for the people" and "To prison!". Some protesters gathered by the Central Election Commission building.

Speaking to journalists, Shor Party Vice-Chair Marina Tauber claimed that members of the incumbent Moldovan government could have 'paved the roads with gold a long time ago', but instead they were 'filling their pockets'.

On Thursday, several regional offices of the Chance party were searched as part of an investigation into a case of illegal financing. According to the Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office, three representatives of the party were detained as a result of the searches.

The party's press service described the searches as 'intimidation' and 'pressure' and attributed them to the authorities' attempts to influence the result of the local elections scheduled for November 5.

On October 4, the Moldovan parliament amended the electoral code, preventing representatives of a party from participating in elections if suspected or accused of committing crimes cited by the court as reasons for declaring their party unconstitutional.

In June, the Moldovan Constitutional Court declared the Shor party 'unconstitutional' over alleged links to Russia, allowing the individual party officials to run for office in October. The Chance party was created by Shor party supporters in order to represent the movement in elections.

The court first launched an enquiry into the activities of the Shor party on May 10 at the request of the government, which accused the party of acting 'contrary to the principles of the rule of law and endangering the sovereignty and independence of the republic'.

The party claimed the accusations were unfounded, saying it 'acts in accordance with the Moldovan legislation'.

In November 2022, the Moldovan government also argued for the liquidation of the opposition party in connection with ongoing protests, which the court rejected.
