Prime Minister Felix Molua stated that the Central African Republic's (CAR) armed forces had increased their defence capabilities 'thanks to Russian instructors', during an interview with Russian media in Moscow on Sunday, March 10.
"Thanks to the help of Russian institutions, we have been able to train a large number of young people who are working very effectively. <...> CAR citizens, trained by Russian instructors, who have proven to be really effective in defeating armed groups. That is why we have insisted on continued co-operation in this area in order to neutralise these large criminal groups on our borders," he said.
Molua also noted that the CAR government planned to reduce food prices following the supply of Russian grain.
"This is an occasion to thank the leadership of the Russian Federation for this initiative, which we appreciate very much. We have concluded a bilateral agreement with Cameroon to process this grain into flour. It will soon be delivered to Bangui. I think there will be about 20,000 tonnes of flour on the market, which the government hopes to use to reduce prices. As you know, there are a lot of problems in the world right now, like inflation. So this is an opportunity for vulnerable households to have access to flour and to bake bread or buns for their children," he said.
The PM also reiterated that CAR was 'open to all countries that want to co-operate with it for a better future'. The Central African Republic has seen civil war between government forces and various militant groups and alliances.
Last August, Russian president Vladimir Putin said that Moscow would deliver up to 50,000 tonnes of grain to six African countries free of charge, during a video address to the BRICS Business Forum on the sidelines of the 15th summit in Johannesburg.
It came after the Black Sea grain deal, signed in Istanbul in July 2022 between representatives of Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Nations, expired on July 17, 2023. That agreement allowed for the export of both Ukrainian grain and Russian food and fertilisers, although Moscow repeatedly insisted the latter part of the deal was not being implemented.
