Dozens of reindeer led the Victory Day parade in Russia’s Yamal-Nenets in Western Siberia on Thursday, marking the 79th anniversary of the end of WWII.

"Children are not aware of this, so they ask, 'Did reindeer also fight?' Yes, they also fought on the North-Western Front in the Murmansk region in Karelia," said Khatyako Ezyngi, an advisor to the head of the Yamal district.

He added that soldiers used reindeer for transportation where there were no roads.

Footage also shows military vehicles, soldiers and veterans taking part in the procession.

Deer transportation battalions were formed in November 1941 and used to move military equipment and deliver ammunition, as well as evacuate injured pilots from remote tundra regions.

Victory Day parades were held on May 9 across Russia, with the main celebrations taking place in Moscow’s Red Square. The day is also observed in many countries around the world.
