Ahead of New Year's Eve, Russian cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov revealed on Wednesday how crew members will celebrate the holiday in zero-gravity conditions on the International Space Station (ISS).

"The New Year will be celebrated by the time of the station. The station lives according to Greenwich, so at midnight GMT [Greenwich] we are entering the year 2024, starting the new year for us. Meanwhile, at nine o'clock in the evening on December 31, New Year's Eve will come in Moscow, and of course, at the time, maybe even in advance, we will get in touch with our relatives and friends via video call to celebrate and listen to the chime clock together," shared the cosmonaut.

Moreover, Borisov added that this year, six of the seven cosmonauts on the station are celebrating New Year's Eve in space for the first time, which is why the crew is going to create their own traditions.

"We are going to create traditions together. One of the traditions I really want to maintain is to watch 'The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!' film together. <...> Of course, we will watch the film in Russian to improve our colleagues' knowledge of the Russian language. We will be explaining everything to them as we watch the film," the cosmonaut noted.

Borisov arrived at the ISS aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon with the Crew-7 expedition on August 27.

The crew also included NASA astronaut and Crew-7 commander Jasmin Moghbeli, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa.

Borisov is the third Russian cosmonaut to travel to the ISS aboard a SpaceX rocket, after Anna Kikina and Andrey Fedyaev, who arrived at the station in October 2022 and March 2023 respectively.
