Muscovites described their New Year's Eve celebrations and plans for the holidays in footage taken in the Russian capital on Monday.

"It is the most wonderful holiday, it reminds us of our childhood, and it is at this time that we remember some pleasant moments from our lives and make wishes," said local resident Lyubov, who added that she spent New Year's Day with her family.

Footage shows people walking along Moscow's streets and taking photographs of the festive decorations.

"It was very nice, very interesting," said Marina, who explained that she had gone to the theatre on New Year's Eve. "We went to the 'Count Orlov' musical show, then came home and celebrated till the morning."

Khanlar added that he had also spent the night with his family.

"I celebrated in a small family circle at home, bought delicious caviar, made tasty sandwiches and a couple of salads. We watched some atmospheric films, listened to the fireworks, but didn't see any, because we couldn't see them from the courtyard. But we heard that it was joyful, bright and loud in Moscow," he said.

A fourth Muscovite, Julia, said that she would 'spend all the holidays outside, because the weather is great'.

"Although it feels cold on the one hand, but on the other hand, everything is so cheerful. We dance and sing together with friends," she continued.

Earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that concerts and other events would be held across 12 districts in the city, with live performances and ice skating in 21 of the capital's parks.
