    Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping participate in the inauguration of a new 'mega port' during the first day of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting in Lima on Thursday, November 14.

    The new port in Chancay is located 60 km (37 miles) from Lima and is expected to serve as part of a new logistics route connecting South America with Asia, increasing the trade market and economy of the region.

    The $1.3 billion project, sponsored by China's COSCO, has been widely criticized in Peru, including in nearby villages, where locals claim they are being deprived of fishing waters.

    APEC unites leaders of 21 countries from the Asia-Pacific region to discuss new technological developments and major topics in economics, science, research, and innovation. The APEC Leaders Summit takes place in Lima on November 14-15.
