Description

Thousands of mourners gathered near Baghdad International Airport on Monday to commemorate the third anniversary of the death of General Qassem Soleimani.

Footage features people lighting candles and laying flowers on the monument, as well as portraits of Soleimani.

"Today, the masses who mourn the martyred leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and the guest of Iraq, Hajj Qassem Soleimani, demand the punishment of the perpetrators and demand the trial of the head of American evil, Trump, and this issue is internationalised through judicial channels and legal channels," said Abd al-Hadi al-Daradji, spokesperson for the Popular Mobilisation Forces group.

Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport, together with the deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis on January 3, 2020.

The Pentagon released a statement confirming the US had carried out the attack on the orders of then-US President Donald Trump, calling it a "decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad."
