“There are no complaints to the Russian Olympic Committee. In case there are no complaints, the country should be able to perform under the national flag. This is what the Olympic Charter [says]. It means WADA’s decision in this case, at least contradicts the Olympic Charter” Putin said.
He went on to slam WADA for “collective punishment,” that according to the Russian President contradicts Roman law. “Punishment cannot be collective and cover those who have nothing to do whatsoever with the violations,” he emphasised.
Putin then stated that Russia is going to appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport as he believes WADA's decision has “political bias that has nothing to do with the Olympic movement and sports” in the heart of it.
On December 9, WADA's Executive Committee barred Russia from taking part in and hosting major sporting events, such as the Olympics, Paralympics and World Championships for four years on the allegation that Russian authorities tampered with data from a Moscow laboratory to hide potential doping cases.
Russian athletes who can clear themselves of wrongdoing will be able to compete under a neutral flag at the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
