Residents of Marrakech headed to local hospitals on Sunday to donate blood in support of the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the North African country on Friday.

Reda Elbeen, a player from the KAC Marrakech football team, extended his condolences to the families affected by the disaster.

"We, the team members and players, have come to donate blood and to join the entire people in this initiative and to help our brothers, may God have mercy on the victims of this earthquake," he said.

"I came today to donate blood to the victims and those affected following the earthquake that occurred," said another donor. "We ask God for safety and recovery for all serious cases and all those affected by this earthquake. We hope that people will donate blood as soon as possible, and we ask for safety for everyone."

The Marrakech Regional Blood Transfusion Centre issued an immediate call for blood donations.

According to the authorities, the confirmed death toll has passed 2,100, and rescuers anticipate that the number may continue to increase.

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicentre of the 6.8 magnitude quake was located 72 km southwest of Marrakech in Morocco's High Atlas mountain range.
