Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni called for 'global governance' of AI technology, during her speech at the 79th United Nations General Assembly High-level Debate in New York on Tuesday.
"It's a technology that, unlike all of the innovations that we've seen throughout the course of history, sets a blueprint for the world in which progress is no longer meant to optimise human capacities but to replace them with consequences that risk being dramatic, especially in the labour market, verticalising and concentrating wealth even more," Meloni claimed.
"It is not by chance that Italy wanted this to be at the top of its agenda, of its G7 presidency, because we want to do our part in defining a global governance for artificial intelligence capable of reconciling innovation, rights, labour, intellectual property, freedom of expression, democracy," she continued.
The prime minister also claimed Africa-Italy relations were at a 'turning point', with "pilot projects in nine African countries, creating strategic partnerships with each".
She also accused Venezuela of 'brutal repression' following the summer elections, and said a 'ceasefire in Gaza' needed to be achieved 'without further delay'.
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly commenced on Tuesday and would last until September 30.
