Fierce clashes erupted in Lima on Wednesday as protesters from civil society and trade union organisations joined a 'national strike' on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Footage shows demonstrators, including members of Peru's indigenous community, pushing and shoving riot police and chanting with megaphones. Others are seen burning US flags and holding banners bearing slogans such as, 'Yankees go home' and 'Peru not for sale'.
It comes as Peruvian President Dina Boluarte hosts leaders from 21 countries from the region, including the United States and China, at the APEC summit for discussions on trade and international diplomacy.
"They come to see their economic interests. They are not interested in the situation of the country, a country that is bleeding," a protester said.
"APEC has not brought any improvement, poverty continues, insecurity continues, informality continues, pollution of the rivers of indigenous peoples continues," added a second.
Over 15,000 soldiers and police officers have been deployed in Lima to provide security during the APEC summit. Schools have been shuttered, and many local businesses have switched to remote operations until Saturday.
The 2024 APEC Forum, held under the motto, 'Empower, Include, Grow', takes place from November 15-16. Peru had previously hosted two editions of the event in 2008 and 2016.
