Several protesters were detained in Istanbul on Sunday during clashes with police at a rally against government’s response to the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake.

Footage features rally participants chanting and shouting. Police officers could be seen guarding the scene and detaining people.

Istanbul saw a rally reportedly staged in Kadikoy Pier Square and planned by the Crisis Coordination of the Alliance for Labour, Peace and Democracy in protest of the Turkish government's response to the deadly quake, which left thousands of deaths, injuries and destruction.

According to local media, the Deputy of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) participated in the protest and claimed that thousands of people died in Adiyaman due to cold weather while they were waiting for help under the rubble. Some protesters at the scene were reportedly shouting that people are still under the rubble and police do not go to help them.

At the time of publication, the total combined death toll of the devastating earthquake crossed 50,000. Turkey alone faced 44,218 deaths, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The quake also killed 5,914 in Syria.

Two weeks after the deadly Turkey-Syria earthquake, a new magnitude 6.4 earthquake jolted both countries again . The quake hit the city of Dene in Hatay province at 8:04 pm local time (17:04 GMT). The quake was reportedly felt in the provincial capital Antakya as well as Adana province. According to the Turkish disaster management agency, a magnitude 5.8 quake came only three minutes later.

Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan paid a visit to various quake-hit cities and areas and had pledged to rebuild homes within a year.
