An Iraqi daredevil attempted to set a new world record in Baghdad on Tuesday, flying with what he claims is the 'largest state flag' to be raised using a motorised paraglider.
Footage shows Hussein Al-Sheikhani and his assistant unfurling the '270 square meter' flag in preparation for the attempt. Later, the Iraqi glider pilot is seen soaring over the capital with the enormous flag in tow.
“Today we succeeded in flying with the largest state flag, the splendid Iraqi flag, through motorised hang gliding in the beloved sky of Baghdad,” Al-Sheikhani said.
“This in itself is a challenge, and unusual by nature, so it is possible that it will enter the Guinness World Records," added Dr Khaled Omran Ali, an Official from the Ministry of High Education.
An adjudicator from Guinness World Records was reportedly invited to the event. At the time of publication, the organisation has yet to verify if Al-Sheikhani’s record attempt was successful.
In 2012, Iraqi national Farid Lafta set a similar Guinness World Record, skydiving over Ottawa, Illinois with a flag measuring 1,226.27 m².
