Republican frontrunner Donald Trump claimed a 'big victory' over incumbent Joe Biden while speaking at a rally in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Friday, saying no amount of 'rigging' could have helped his political rival in the first debate of the presidential election campaign.

"Joe Biden spent the entire week at Camp David resting, working, studying. He studied very hard; he studied so hard that he didn't know what the hell he was doing," Trump told his supporters.

"He got the debate rules that we wanted. He got the date that he wanted. He got the network that he wanted with the moderates he wanted. No amount of rest or rigging could help him defend his atrocious record," he continued.

The former US president also responded to rumours that Democrats may seek to replace Biden as their presidential nominee after his performance in Thursday night's debate.

"Many people are saying that after last night's performance, Joe Biden is leaving the race. But the fact is, I do not really believe that because he does better in polls than any of the Democrats they're talking about," Trump added.

During the debate hosted by CNN in Atlanta, the candidates clashed over taxes, the border, Trump's ongoing legal issues, China, the Ukraine conflict - and even their golf handicaps.

According to media reports, Biden appeared to stumble and freeze a number of times, with his campaign claiming he was suffering from a cold. A CNN poll found Trump to be the clear winner, with 67 per cent of those watching backing his performance to 33 per cent for Biden.
