During a televised speech from Caracas on Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that the European Union (EU) Ambassador in Caracas, Isabel Brilhante Pedros, has 72 hours to leave the country after the EU sanctioned a group of Venezuelan deputies and government officials.
"I have decided to give the European Union ambassador in Caracas 72 hours to leave our country, and to demand respect from the European Union, enough of European colonialism against Venezuela," Maduro said.
The Venezuelan president described the sanctions as an example of the "greatest colonial, interventionist, and supremacist tradition," also calling it an "attitude inherited from the old and disgusting European colonialism that filled the continents of America, Africa and Asia with slavery, death and, destruction."
On Monday, the European Union announced sanctions against a dozen deputies of the National Assembly, as well as military and other high-ranking officials of the Venezuelan government.
