Demonstrators gathered outside a courthouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Monday as the murder trial of Kyle Rittenhouse kicked off.
Supporters of Rittenhouse came to court buildings to have their voices heard, as did those that oppose him. Some heated exchanges between the two sides took place in front of the courthouse.
“We deserve the right to walk down the street without being gunned down, we deserve to be in our houses without being shot, in your pyjamas and slippers with the Tailors. We deserve not to have somebody kneel on our neck for damn near ten minutes, we deserve these things,” Justin Blake, activist and uncle of Jacob Blake - who was shot and seriously injured by police in August 2020 -, said.
On the first day of trial, a jury of 20 members (21 jurors and 12 alternates) has been selected. Opening statements are scheduled to begin Tuesday and the trial is set to last about two weeks.
The trial has been postponed since March by Judge Bruce Schroeder as requested by prosecutors and the defence.
Eighteen-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse is accused of shooting three men during protests in Kenosha following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, who was left paralysed.
The three victims were Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum, who were killed, and Gaige Grosskreutz, who was seriously wounded.
