Thousands of pro-Palestine protesters held a major rally in Paris on Saturday to denounce what they described as the "complicity" of Western nations in the ongoing conflict in Gaza through their provision of arms and financial support to Israel. This demonstration came as the first anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war approached.
Footage from the event captured protesters marching from Place de la Republique, waving Palestinian and Lebanese flags while chanting slogans such as "Long live the struggle of the Palestinian people" and "We are all children of Lebanon, we are all children of Gaza." The demonstration traversed multiple streets, concluding at Place de Clichy, all under close monitoring by local police.
"It's all well and good to say, yes, ceasefire, yes, ceasefire, and worry about the risk of a regional war, but if Western countries don't stop Israel's criminal machine, there's no reason for it to stop,” stated Veronique, a member of the France Palestine Solidarity Association and one of the rally organisers.
Other activists echoed this sentiment, expressing their frustration with Western leaders and accusing them of perpetuating the conflict by supporting Tel Aviv with military aid.
“Continuing the support to Israel must end. Israel will go as far as it is allowed to go,” shared Omar Alsoumi, an activist of the Urgence Palestine association.
According to local authorities, up to 5,000 protesters participated in the Paris rally, while similar demonstrations erupted across France, attracting tens of thousands of participants in cities such as Lyon, Toulouse, and Strasbourg.
Similar protests in support of Palestine and Lebanon took place across the world on Saturday, as part of International Day of Action, to stand in solidarity with civilians in Gaza and Lebanon ahead of the first anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war.
The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.
In the Gaza Strip, Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 41,534 people had been killed and more than 96,092 injured at the time of publication.
