US President Donald Trump celebrated the recently announced ceasefire in northern Syria, calling it a 'great day for civilisation' during a trip to Fort-Worth, Texas on Thursday.
"This is an incredible outcome. This outcome is something they've been trying to get for 10 years, everybody. And they couldn't get it, other administrations," he said.
"It's a great day for the United States. It's a great day for Turkey. It's a great day for our partners who have really worked. I mean, a lot of people question some of them. I'm not questioning anybody. They really did. The Kurds were great. Great day for the Kurds. It's really a great day for civilisation, it's a great day for civilisation."
Earlier on Thursday, US Vice President Mike Pence announced a five-day ceasefire in Turkey's military offensive, dubbed 'Operation Peace Spring,' which began on October 9, days after the White House announced a withdrawal of US troops from the area. Ankara said the aim of the offensive was to create a 'safe zone' cleared of Kurdish groups.
