Description

Police officers used tear gas and water cannons as they tried to disperse protesters gathered to mark the 13th anniversary of the police killing of a Mapuche student activist in Santiago on Monday.

Police vehicles launched tear gas and water cannons as they targeted demonstrators who were attempting to block traffic near the Chilean capital's Plaza Baquedano.

Demonstrators could also be seen bashing police vehicles with shields and other objects, while volunteers from the Newen Brigade, a self-described first aid group, were also seen facing off with officers.

Matias Catrileo was a 23-year-old member of the indigenous Mapuche community, who was shot dead by police while participating in the occupation of an estate belonging to Jorge Luchsinger, a Chilean landowner, on January 3, 2008, with other indigenous activists.
